Keep MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and your Expert Advisors running while your own computer is off: an always-on Windows server you reach over Remote Desktop.
Quick answer
A forex VPS is a rented, always-on remote Windows server that runs your MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 terminal and Expert Advisors (EAs) around the clock. You connect over Remote Desktop (RDP), install the terminal, log in to your trading account and close the window; the terminal keeps running. Power cuts, home internet drops and Windows updates on your own PC no longer interrupt your trades. A forex VPS does not promise profit or a specific latency; it simply gives you an uninterrupted environment on an RDP server.

A forex VPS is useful for any trader who has handed trading over to automated systems or wants the terminal open all day. The forex market runs almost non-stop on weekdays, and an Expert Advisor can only watch prices, send orders and manage stop-loss levels while the terminal is open. When your computer goes to sleep or your internet connection drops, the EA stops too.
Typical users include:
If you trade manually and only open the terminal while sitting at the screen, a forex VPS is not essential. If you rely on terminal-side features such as a trailing stop, however, a server still makes a difference.
An always-on server removes the interruptions you cannot control on a home PC. The most common problems traders face when running EAs at home are power cuts, router restarts, automatic reboots after Windows Update, screen savers or sleep mode, and heavy tasks such as games or video slowing down the terminal on the same machine.
A server in a data center reduces these risks: it runs on uninterruptible power, redundant network links and a static IP address. LIONFIN infrastructure is monitored 24/7 by our NOC and SOC with a 99.99% availability target; this is a target, not a guarantee. The server itself can also restart for maintenance or updates, so making the terminal start automatically (explained below) is a good habit in any case.
Isolation is another benefit. The trading terminal runs on a separate machine from the computer where you read personal email and download files. Malware on your personal PC is less likely to reach your account credentials, and the terminal does not share resources with other applications.
Cost matters too. Keeping a desktop on day and night just for an EA means extra electricity, hardware wear and a UPS. With a rented server those infrastructure costs are included; you only manage the terminal and your strategy, and your home computer stays free for everyday work.
Windows is the most trouble-free choice for a forex VPS, because MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are native Windows applications. MetaQuotes publishes instructions for running MT5 on Linux through the Wine compatibility layer, but some indicators, EAs that use DLLs and third-party add-ons may behave unexpectedly that way. Running a terminal on Linux also requires installing a desktop environment and a remote access tool.
For forex use, LIONFIN recommends the RDP Server product group: it comes with Windows Server installed, is delivered with administrator rights and you can connect over Remote Desktop straight away. Other Windows-based platforms such as cTrader and NinjaTrader run on the same server.
A Linux-based VPS server makes sense for bots written in Python that connect directly to a broker’s REST or FIX API; no graphical interface is needed there, and resource efficiency is higher. If you are unsure which route fits, the RDP server or VDS comparison explains the management differences in detail.
In short: graphical terminal, ready-made EAs and trade copiers mean Windows; trading only through your own code via an API means Linux. Think about the toolset your strategy will need in six months, not just today, because moving between the two environments later is more work than choosing correctly at the start.
The main factors are the number of terminals, the number of open charts in each terminal and the computational load of your EAs. A single MT4 terminal with a few charts uses relatively little memory, but each new terminal is a separate process that keeps its own price history. The table above is an approximate starting point; match it against the current values in the package table.
Use these rules for sizing:
MQL4\Logs and logs folders regularly. If memory use in Task Manager stays above 80 percent, moving to a larger package is the cleanest fix.
The effect of a forex VPS on latency depends on how close the server is to your broker’s trade server; on its own it does not guarantee “low latency”. Broker trade servers are usually located in data centers in financial hubs such as London, New York or Tokyo. A server in Türkiye offers a more stable path than a home connection, but if your broker’s server is on another continent, physical distance does not disappear.
That is why we do not promise a number. You can measure the real value yourself:
For scalping strategies that open and close within seconds, latency can be decisive; for EAs working on hourly or daily timeframes, the real gain is continuity.
The virtual hosting service built into the MetaQuotes terminal copies and runs the EAs and indicators of a single terminal; your own forex VPS is a full Windows desktop on which you have administrator rights. They serve different needs.
| Criterion | In-terminal virtual hosting | Your own RDP server |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop access | None; the terminal runs in the background | Full desktop over Remote Desktop |
| Number of terminals | One terminal environment per subscription | As many as resources allow |
| Third-party software | Cannot be installed | Trade copier, Excel, browser can be installed |
| Limitations | Some functions such as DLL calls are restricted | Limited only by server resources |
| Management | By MetaQuotes | By you; updates and security are your responsibility |
If you run a single EA without DLLs on one account, in-terminal hosting may be enough. If you work with several brokers, trade copiers, custom indicators or Python scripts, your own server is more flexible. Check the MetaQuotes documentation for current details of the limitations.
Securing a forex VPS starts with limiting who can connect to the server and protecting your terminal login details. Your trading account password is stored on the server, so a hijacked RDP session means direct trading access.
Do not download random EAs or “free robot” files to the server; .ex4 or .ex5 files from unknown sources can put your account at risk.
The data that really needs backing up on a forex VPS is the EA, indicator, template and settings files in the terminal’s data folder; price history can be downloaded again from the broker. In MetaTrader, File → Open Data Folder shows this folder.
Regular backup list:
MQL4 or MQL5 folder: the Experts, Indicators, Scripts, Include and Files subfolders.templates and profiles: chart templates and workspace layout.config: terminal settings..set parameter files and source code (.mq4/.mq5).Compressing these folders and copying them weekly to your own computer or cloud storage gets you back up within minutes if you ever need to rebuild the server. A daily backup in your package is an extra safeguard at server level, but keeping your own copy is what the 3-2-1 backup rule requires.
The right way to manage several accounts on one forex VPS is a separate terminal installed in a separate folder for each account. MetaTrader cannot be opened twice from the same folder; for a second broker or second account, simply change the target folder in the installer. Naming folders by broker and account type (for example MT5-BrokerA-Live, MT5-BrokerA-Demo) avoids confusion.
/portable parameter and data is kept inside the installation folder rather than the user profile, which makes backups and server moves easier.Running demo and live accounts on the same server is also a practical way to compare a new EA under identical conditions before taking it live.
The main points are the operating system, administrator rights, scalable resources, monitoring and access to support; latency figures in adverts only mean something once you have measured them yourself.
Most forex VPS problems come from session handling, automatic start-up and the AutoTrading setting; hardware is rarely the cause.
Closing the Remote Desktop window with the X in the top-right corner leaves the session open and the terminal keeps running. Start → Sign out closes every program. Always disconnect with the X.
Put the terminal shortcut in the shell:startup folder and configure automatic logon in Windows, or create a Task Scheduler task triggered “at log on”. The terminal remembers the charts and EAs that were open when it closed.
Check that the AutoTrading button (Algo Trading in MT5) on the toolbar is on, that “Allow live trading” is ticked in the EA settings and that the Experts tab shows no errors.
The server time zone can affect an EA’s trading hours. If your EA works on local time, set the server time zone accordingly; most EAs use the broker’s server time instead.
A forex VPS is purely technical infrastructure; which broker you trade with and on what terms is your responsibility. Check that your broker is authorised by the financial regulator in your country of residence; for residents of Türkiye, only brokers licensed by the Capital Markets Board (SPK) may offer leveraged trading.
Leveraged products carry high risk, and an automated system can lose money too. The server does not improve the EA’s strategy; it only helps it run continuously as planned. Running the EA on a demo account on the same server for a while before going live is the safest way to see that both the strategy and your server setup behave as expected.
Be careful with purchased EAs as well. Past performance charts, especially those produced only by back-testing, do not show future results. Review the seller’s live account records, risk management and licence terms, and stay away from products promising “guaranteed profit”. However reliable the server, it does not change the quality of the strategy.
LIONFIN gives no investment advice, sells no EAs and makes no commitment about trading results. What we provide is a Windows-based remote desktop server, infrastructure monitored 24/7 from our data center in İzmir, Türkiye, and technical support through support tickets.
Choose a package
Pick an RDP Server package that fits your number of terminals and charts, and complete the order.
Connect to the server
Use the IP address and administrator details from the customer panel to connect with Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc), then change the password.
Configure security
Change the RDP port, open only the new port in the firewall and enable the account lockout policy.
Install the terminal
Download the MetaTrader 4 or 5 installer from your broker’s official website, install it and log in to your account.
Load the EA
Copy the EA files into the Experts folder in the data folder, drag the EA onto a chart and switch AutoTrading on.
Set up automatic start
Add the terminal shortcut to the startup folder, then close the Remote Desktop window with the X without signing out.
Legal note
Leveraged trading carries high risk. LIONFIN does not give investment advice; the server service makes no commitment about trading results.
No. A forex VPS only provides an environment where your terminal and EA run without interruption. Profitability depends on the strategy, market conditions and your risk management. The server helps you avoid missed trades caused by power or internet outages, but it does not prevent losses.
Yes. By installing each terminal in a different folder you can run several MT4 or MT5 instances on the same server; just change the target folder during installation. The limit is set by the server’s memory and processor, so look at higher-resource options in the package table as your terminal count grows.
Yes. With Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app for iOS and Android you can connect from a phone or tablet. Enter the IP address, port and user details and you will see the same desktop. Make sure you do not sign out when you disconnect.
If you close the window with the X in the top-right corner, the session stays open on the server and the EA keeps running. If you sign out from the Start menu, every program closes and the EA stops. Mixing these two up is the most common forex VPS mistake.
Technically MT5 can run on Linux through Wine, but some EAs, DLL-based tools and indicators may cause problems. For trouble-free use a Windows-based RDP server is recommended. Python bots that connect directly to a broker API run comfortably on a Linux VPS.
The terminal does not open by itself after a restart; without automatic start-up the EA stops. If you add the terminal shortcut to the startup folder and configure automatic logon, the terminal reopens with its charts and EAs. Also schedule Windows updates for a convenient time.
MetaTrader terminals are distributed free by brokers. Licences for purchased EAs are usually tied to an account number or device, so you may need to reactivate them after moving to the server. Check the EA seller’s licence terms in advance. The Windows Server licence is included with the package.
The server is not tied to any broker; you can install the terminal of any broker offering MetaTrader or cTrader. Make sure the broker is authorised in your country of residence; for residents of Türkiye that means an SPK-licensed firm. Broker choice and account terms are entirely your decision.
Click the connection indicator in the bottom-right corner of MetaTrader and the terminal shows the values it measures to the broker’s access points. Run the same check on your home computer to compare. Because the result depends on where the broker’s server is, no fixed figure can be promised.
